Chitosan, a chitin derivative by N-deacetylation, stimulates the ordered regeneration of
oral soft tissues, prevents the harmful action of organic acid, and exhibits bactericidal
action against several pathogens. In this study, we examined the effects of chitosan on
the growth and adsorption to saliva-coated hydroxyapatite beads of mutans streptococci
in vitro. The strains of mutants streptococci were S. mutans KCTC 3065. S. cricetus
KCTC 3292, S. rattus KCTC 3294, and S. sobrinus SL-1 KCTC 3308 strain. We found
that chitosan of sublethal concentrations had inhibitory effects on growth and adherence
to saliva-coated hydroxyapatite beads of mutans streptococci. The results obtained were
as follows.
1. The inhibitory effects of chitosan on the growth of S. mutans KCTC 3065 strain
were 28%, 31%, 52% at the concentrations of 100§¶/§¢, 500§¶/§¢, and 1000§¶/§¢ of
chitosan, respectively.
2. The rate growth inhibition was 20-28% by chitosan alone, and 42-58% by chitosan
with the 3 kinds of sugars supplemented as the substrates. The growth patterns in S.
rattus KCTC 3294 strain was differed from that of S. mutans KCTC 3065. The rate of
growth inhibition in S. mutans KCTC 3065 strain was 28% when chitosan was
supplemented.
3. The effects of with and without chitosan for the adherences to saliva-coated
hydroxyapatite were evaluated when the sucrose, glucose, and sorbitol were
supplemented as the substrates. The reduction of adsorption to saliva-coated
hydroxyapatite beads in 5. mutant KCTC 3065 strain was ranged from 47 to 58% when
sugar was supplemented.
